Since I was young, writing has been my one outlet of expression. I wrote about everything. I'm not one to usually vent to people, I feel like I drag them down when I do so, and I think my parents realized that, so they bought me my first journal when I was 13. For a while this journal served as a sort of diary. I would even write Dear Diary, Today I.... but it proved to be ineffective. I was always a good writer so I wasn't sure why this didn't work for me. Then I went to Winter Camp.
During this time I was gifted with a composition notebook, customized for me, and included a letter from my leaders and a written down prayer from them. That's when I began spiritual journaling. I'm not saying I completely stopped the whole "Dear Diary" thing. I just went about it in a different way.
I would (and still) have many different journals, for many different things. I guess you can call me a little CDO (OCD). In these journals I would mostly write poetry, quotes, song lyrics, or sometimes let my conscious stream and write whatever my hand put on the paper. Slowly my spiritual journal was left in the corner to collect dust.
I can thank my new continuation of spiritual journaling on this church. For Personal Progress, journaling is a big deal. Heck, in this church journaling is a big deal. So I had a journal I specifically used for personal progress, and once we got a "10 Day Press Forward Challenge" I bought a new one (pictured above). I've spent the last ten days writing about how to press forward and dealing with the trials that come my way, and reading scriptures and I didn't want to stop.
They say it takes 21 times to develop a new habit. Sometimes it's sooner. Because I had such a drive to continue writing I did some research for finding some nice journaling topics that can channel the spirit. That's when I came up with my journal jar. In this jar, there are 100 pieces of paper and each one has a journal prompt on it. If you're anything like me and have a hard time coming up with your own things to write about in your journal, this'll help you TONS!!!! I know it's helped me!
At the bottom of this page you'll see a Microsoft Document attached, which has all 100 topics typed up and spaced apart so all you need to do is print out and cut. I believe the font can be changed to be more masculine, if you find it too feminine. That reminds me! These prompts are pretty gender-neutral so men and women can use them, they also have no specific age set. You can be 12 or 70 and you can still write about these. However, there are some that may require some work on your part, but that's all part of the fun, and an amazing way to channel the spirit while writing.
If you're a crafty soul like me, and want to decorate a jar or container, etc. to put your prompts in go ahead! I would also love to see them, so feel free to tag me in your photos on instagram, or twitter, or even comment below!
Happy Journaling! And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
